seasonal Summer Camp Counselors

For more than 50 years, Junior Blind of America’s Camp Bloomfield has provided children and youth who are blind, visually impaired or multi-disabled with a natural and safe environment to develop self esteem, build independence and fully experience the joys of childhood. Nestled in the Santa Monica Mountains in Malibu, CA, this 40-acre campground offers various week-long camp sessions for children of all ages and their families.

Recreation—Education—Independence

In a safe and encouraging environment children and teens enjoy daily activities including:
• Horseback Riding
• Swimming
• Archery
• Campfire Activities
• Fishing
• Climbing and High Ropes Course
• Arts and Crafts
• Sea Kayaking
• Martial Arts
• Nature/Hiking Trails

Each day, new challenges are met, friendships are formed, and memories are made at Camp Bloomfield. Accredited by the American Camping Association (ACA), Camp Bloomfield is the largest facility of its kind in the Western United States, serving hundreds of campers every year.

We are currently looking for qualified, responsible, friendly and fun individuals for our various seasonal camp staff positions. The camp runs June 15, 2009 through August 14, 2009. The requirements for all camp staff positions are:

• Knowledge and experience working in a camp setting, preferred.
• Ability to be an excellent role model.
• Ability to live comfortably in a small community and work effectively as a member of a team.
• Ability to follow supervision and instructions.
• Must be responsible, creative, motivated, and professional.
• Flexibility with regard to tasks, work hours, changes in program or plans.
• First Aid and CPR certified (training provided by camp).

The following camp staff positions are:

Camp Counselor
• Works with campers of various ages.
• Spends the day working with campers and participating in the activities with them.
• Lives in cabin with campers.

Archery Activity Leader
• Organizes and teaches archery to campers of various ages and abilities.
• Archery certification required (provided by camp).
• Oversees maintenance of equipment and range.
• Assists with all camp activities and events.

Wrangler
• Ability to ride, school, and care for horses a must.
• Management of horseback riding program.
• CHA certified, preferred.
• Assists with all camp activities and events.

Lifeguard
• Ability to teach the fundamentals of swimming.
• Lifeguard, clean, and maintain the pool.
• Red Cross or YMCA certification with current CPR for the professional rescuer (provided by camp).
• Assists with all camp activities and events.

Challenge Course Activity Leader (Climbing Wall/Ropes Course)
• Challenge course certificate required (provided by camp).
• Leads ropes course and team building activity periods
• Sets up, breaks down, and manages course each day that it is in use.
• Assists with all camp activities and events.

Campfire Activity Leader
• Leads campfire program and overnight program.
• Assists campers with ideas for songs/skits for night program.
• Leads talent show programs throughout summer.
• Assists with all camp activities and events.

Nature Activity Leader
• Leads programs in environmental education and nature study for campers.
• Works cooperatively with other staff as a resource for environmental/nature projects and activities.
• Leads scavenger hunts and nature hikes.
• Assists with all camp activities and events.
