seasonal Lifeguard

Name: City of Aurora
Location: Aurora, Colorado

Performs a variety of routine tasks related to visitor safety at the swim beach at Aurora Reservoir.

Applicant must be able to work weekends and holidays from Memorial Day to Labor Day.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Responsible for the safety of visitor to the swim beach; performs tasks to maintain safety and cleanliness of swim beach and immediate area, including providing patron information, enforcing rules, responding to emergencies, providing first aid, working with other emergency personnel, and performing daily area and equipment maintenance; guards work from the beach, guards stands and floating platforms, rescue boards, and kayaks. Responsible for regular checks of the area throughout the day for hazardous objects or situations, to include setting and adjusting floating lane markers and buoys; keeps and maintains accurate accident and incident records and performs additional duties as assigned.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Must have Lifeguard certification, be 16 years of age, and the ability to successfully complete the following:
1. Swim 300 yards continuously, using these three strokes in the following order.
- 100 yards of front crawl using rhythmic breathing.
- 100 yards of breaststroke
- 100 yards of either front crawl or breast stroke
2. Swim 20 yards, surface dive 7-10 feet, retrieve 10 pound object, swim 20 yards, and exit the water within 1 minute, 40 seconds.

Education/Experience An equivalent combination of education, training and experience that demonstrates required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered.
Knowledge Knowledge of current lifeguard techniques, aquatic safety and emergency action plans.
Skills Skill in the life saving techniques and emergency response.

LICENSES, CERTIFICATES OR EQUIPMENT REQUIRED: Current and valid driver�s license, Current Lifeguard Training Certificate, must be able to successfully complete a physical fitness and lifeguard skill practical exam at the start and periodically throughout the summer; and current standard first aid and CPR certification or equivalent program certification. This position may require the incumbent to occasionally use personal equipment (e.g. vehicle, cell phone, tools, etc.) in the course of their employment.


WORKING CONDITIONS Physical Demands: Moderate to heavy physical work lifting a maximum of 100 pounds; frequent lifting and carrying of objects weighing up to 50 pounds; regular walking and standing; regular climbing; bending; kneeling and crouching; hand/foot/eye coordination to perform appropriate rescue skills; vision to read instructions; hearing and speech abilities for communication with employees and citizens.
Work Environment: Works outdoors in varying weather conditions with exposure to sun, dust, and noise; swimming in cold water and other conditions found at an outdoor swim beach.
Equipment Used: Operates equipment related to an aquatic facility.
