Action Alliance for Children (AAC) is committed to the statewide education and empowerment of people who work with and on behalf of children. Our award-winning Children's Advocate covers issues affecting children and families in California, including welfare reform, child care, education, health care, and violence prevention. The newsmagazine also contains resource lists, reviews of children's books, and descriptions of innovative model programs.
During this unpaid internship, interns:
- Write news articles on public policy issues affecting children and families
- Conduct research and develop story ideas
- Learn about producing a bimonthly newspaper — from story development through post-production work.
Intern requirements: 8 hours per week during regular business hours, working from our office in Oakland, CA; commitment of two or more semesters preferred. Ability to analyze complex policy issues and describe them in a clear, accessible style. Comfortable conducting interviews by telephone. Graduate or upper-division undergraduate status. Lower-division students with previous editorial experience may apply as well. Major in communications, education, English, political science, public health, or a related field. Previous writing experience preferred. Interest or experience in social justice issues a plus.
Compensation: Interns receive $68 per month.

The Agency: In addition to publishing the Children’s Advocate, AAC holds forums and conferences; maintains a website; facilitates dialogue with other children's service and advocacy groups; and serves as an informational resource and clearinghouse.
